Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions). The repetitive behaviors, such as hand washing, checking on things or cleaning, can significantly interfere with a person’s daily activities and social interactions.
These thoughts and behaviour, on the other hand, only cause problems in everyday life Many people with OCD are aware of or conclude that their obsessions are irrational, although others believe they are always right (known as limited insight). People with OCD have trouble disengaging from intrusive thinking or avoiding compulsive behaviours, even though they are aware that their obsessions are unreal.
